In her work, Mithu Sen (1971, India) contrasts scale, subject, and genre in order to bring her astonishing imagination to life. Working spontaneously through installations and painting, signs lead to one another, without any preconceived narrative or definitive meaning. Presented in the style of free association, they are curious collections of motifs that playfully undermine accepted views of femininity and sexuality. In addition to combining complex and large forms, bringing together animals, people, and inanimate objects, and combining drawing, painting, and collage, Sen’s works elicit humour as well as serious reflection on the part of the viewer.
